This means that we will be having class Monday, May 10th. This should not effect our final exam which will still take place Wednesday, May 12th. I will keep you informed of other changes as they come up.

Camera + Mise-en-scene = City of God | 2.17
http://www.fadedrequiem.com/zoetrope/?p=692
Due to some (I use that term loosely) snow, we played a bit of catch up tonight and continued our discussion on cinematography. We began looking at mise-en-scene and tried to grasp City of God. mobile framing – possible to move frame with respect to framed material camera movement (basic)
pan – move camera from left to right (vertical axis) tilt – move camera from top to bottom (horizontal axis) roll - rolling camera on side
tracking shot – camera travels in any direction on ground crane shot Steadicam – gimbal balanced camera mount, allows cameraman to walk with camera w/o camera shake hand-held camera – used to create subjective point-of-view, in the action duration of image – the long take – unusually lengthy shot that may incorporate all aspects of mobile framing to create shot without edits After discovering the “how” of what…

Clarification on Film Reviews
http://www.fadedrequiem.com/zoetrope/?p=688
A paper copy of your film reviews is due next Wednesday. You only need to give me a paper copy next Wednesday. Once it is grade and returned, you will be editing it and then resubmitting it electronically. So please do not send me the review in electronic format yet! I want to be able to give you a chance to edit it before it being posted here.

Cinematography & Sunset Blvd. | February 3rd
http://www.fadedrequiem.com/zoetrope/?p=677
The camera is a vital component to the system of film. It is the “how you see it” aspect. What began as a static method, cinematography has evolved into an art form. In addition, we watched one of the all time great films, Sunset Blvd. Cinematography
photographic aspects of the shot framing of shot duration of shot
photographic aspect filmmaker can control visual qualities by manipulating film stock, exposure, and developing process speed of motion – frames per second (fps)
silent era until sound was 16 to 20 fps to synchronize with sound it becomes 24 fps fewer fps = greater acceleration of screen action more fps = slower screen action – slow motion
the lens = focal length – distance from center of lens to point where light rays converge to a point of focus on film
short-focal-length (wide-angle) – exaggerates depth, show…

Form & Writing About Film | January 27th
http://www.fadedrequiem.com/zoetrope/?p=672
This evening we covered film form and writing about film. If you want to see more writing about films, check out the film review links on the sidebar. You can even visit my review site, Resonance. And yes, I am quite okay with you disagreeing with my reviews. Remember that reviews are opinions, and everyone will perceive a film in a different way. Form as System artistic form – mind never at rest, constantly seeking order & significance, testing world for breaks in habitual pattern
artworks rely on unifying quality of human mind
film has form – overall system of relations that we can perceive among elements in whole film
set of narrative elements – the story stylistic elements – way camera moves, patterns of color in frame, use of music mind wants to bring two elements together
Form versus Content exist together in…

Spring Semester Begins
http://www.fadedrequiem.com/zoetrope/?p=631
For anyone wondering, the spring semester begins January 13th. If you are in (or are considering taking) my Art of the Cinema class, the syllabus and schedule are now posted in the Class Materials section of the site. I will soon be posting a viewing schedule and the assignments in full. If you are in one of my History of the Cinema classes, you are probably just here browsing since all of your material will be located in Blackboard. I will hopefully be drawing both classes together for some discussion and will certainly referring to this site as a great way to see what we are doing in the Art of the Cinema. I wold suggest that both classes follow FilmClasses on Twitter. I will use twitter to announce items and also provide interesting observations or even images (my collection of iPhone pictures from…

Volver & Review | June 29
http://www.fadedrequiem.com/zoetrope/?p=600
Volver was a nice way to end our class. Anything else to comment? Post a comment (for extra credit perhaps?) and voice your ideas. Now on to the important stuff. Exam Review You will be answering 5 out of 8 possible essay questions. Each questions will be worth 20 points for a possible 100 points. Each question can be answered in at least one well developed paragraph. Can someone besides a director be an auteur? Give examples. What is mise-en-scene? Give two example from a film viewed in class. Those were just two hints so you know what the essay questions will be like. You will have the entire 3 hours and 20 minutes to take the exam, but it should only really take about an hour or so.
